第1幕。ACT I.
当初は場面ごとに区切るつもりであったが、かなり長くなるので細分化する。
第1場。SCENE I.
天から離れた地。日の出の時。
The Land without Paradise. - Time, Sunrise.
アダム、イブ、カイン、アベル、アダー、ジラーが生贄を捧げる。
ADAM, EVE, CAIN, ABEL, ADAH, ZILLAH, offering a Sacrifice.
- アダム。ADAM.：

神よ、永遠なる！広大無辺にして！全智なる！
いと深き闇を抜け、水面を「ひかり」
給わす方よ、ただ万歳の声あるのみ！
イェホヴァよ、還り来りませる光よ、万歳！GOD, the Eternal ! Infinite ! All - Wise ! -
Who out of darkness on the deep didst make
Light on the waters with a word all hail !
Jehovah*1, with returning light, all hail ! - イブ。EVE.：

神よ！昼を名付け給い、それまで
分け隔てなかった朝と夜を分け給いし方、
波を波から分け給いし方、
大空を御業の一部と呼ばれし方よ、万歳！God ! who didst name the day, and separate
Morning from night, till then divided never-
Who didst divide the wave from wave, and call
Part of thy work the firmament all hail ! - アベル。ABEL.：

神よ！元素を呼び寄せます方よ、
大地に、海に、空気に、火に、そして昼
そして夜もて、世界を、あるいは照らし、
あるいは影を落とし、それらを享受する生き物を創りませる、
そしてそれらと貴方の何れをも愛するようになさります方よ。万歳！万歳！God ! who didst call the elements into
Earth - ocean - air - and fire, and with the day
And night, and worlds which these illuminate
Or shadow, madest*2 beings to enjoy them,
And love both them and thee all hail ! all hail ! - アダー。ADAH.：

これらお創りになった方、最良にして美しき存在を、
愛されるため、何にも勝って、救い給え

Who didst create these best and beauteous beings,
To be beloved, more than all, save thee-

Why should I speak ?

To pray.

お祈りしてなかった？
Have ye not pray'd ?
- アダム。ADAM.

してるじゃないか、熱烈に。
We have, most fervently.
- CAIN.

うるさいくらいに。
聞こえてたし。And loudly : I
Have heard you. - アダム。ADAM.

それはもう信じてるから、神様。
So will God, I trust.
- ABEL.

アーメン！
Amen !
- アダム。ADAM.
-
だのにお前は、わが長子よ、黙りこくって。
But thou, my eldest-born, art silent still.
- カイン。CAIN.
-
そうした方が良いかと。
' Tis better I should be so.
- アダム。ADAM.
-
何でそうなる？
Wherefore so ?
- カイン。CAIN.
-
願うでもなし。
I have nought to ask.
- アダム。ADAM.
-
感謝することは？
Nor aught to thank for ?
- カイン。CAIN.
-
ない。
No.
- アダム。ADAM.
-
生きてない訳でもあるまい？
Dost thou not live ?
- カイン。CAIN.

死ななきゃならない？
Must I not die ?
- イブ。EVE.

ええっ！
ダメよ、禁断の木の実が
落ちて来そう。Alas !
No. The fruit of our forbidden tree begins
To fall. - アダム。ADAM.
-
そいつはまた拾い集めなくてはな。
ああ、神よ！何ゆえ、知恵の木など植え給うた？And we must gather it again.
Oh, God ! why didst thou plant the tree of knowledge ? - カイン。CAIN.
-
それで、どうして生命の木の実を摘まなかったの？
そうしたら、反抗できたかも。And wherefore pluck'd ye not the tree of life ?
Ye might have then defied him. - アダム。ADAM.
-
いや、わが子よ。
冒瀆するな。そんなのは蛇の語だ。Oh ! my son,
Blaspheme not : these are serpents ' words. - カイン。CAIN.

で？
蛇は真実を語った。その木は知恵の木だった。
その木は生命の木だった。知恵は良きもの、
生命は良きもの。どっちも悪者だなんて事なくない？Why not ?
The snake spoke truth : it was the tree of knowledge ;
It was the tree of life : -knowledge is good,
And life is good ; and how can both be evil ? - イブ。EVE.

この子ったら！私が罪を犯していた時と同じ事を言うのね、
お前が生まれる前に。繰り返されるところなんて見せないで
私の無惨がお前にだなんて。私は悔い改めたのに。
私の子孫が落ちるところなんて見せないで
楽園の壁の向こうにある罠に、
楽園に在って両親を破滅させた。
今あるもので満足なさい。私たちがそうしていたら、
お前も満足していたでしょうに。わが子よ！My boy ! thou speakest as I spoke in sin,
Before thy birth : let me not see renew'd
My misery in thine. I have repented.
Let me not see my offspring fall into
The snares beyond the walls of Paradise,
Which e'en in Paradise destroy'd his parents.
Content thee with what is. Had we been so,
Thou now hadst been contented. - Oh, my son ! - アダム。ADAM.

お祈りは済んだ。さあ、
めいめい自分の仕事に精出そう。重くはなく
必要なことを。大地は若く、優しく齎す
働くこと容易くして、豊かな稔りを。Our orisons completed, let us hence,
Each to his task of toil - not heavy, though
Needful : the earth is young, and yields us kindly
Her fruits with little labour. - イブ。EVE.

ご覧よ、父さんが陽気に、諦めの境地にあるのを、
あのようになさい。Cain, my son,
Behold thy father cheerful and resign'd,*3
And do as he doth.
[ Exit ADAM and EVE.
ラヴェル：バレエ音楽『ダフニスとクロエ』第2組曲
- 夜明け（Lever du jour）
- 無言劇（Pantomime）
- 全員の踊り（Danse générale）
この組曲は、バレエ音楽の第3場に当たる。今まで意識していなかったが、元のバレエ音楽は合唱が加わる編成で、1時間くらいかかる大作ゆえ、全曲を演奏する機会は第2組曲に及ばないようだ。演奏はクリスティアン・マチェラル指揮フランス国立管弦楽団。
*1:聖書の神を表す神聖四文字 YHWH の英語読み。「十戒」厳守により元の発音が失われたため、この読み方が正しいのか明らかではない。
