ATU類型：ATU 365A (The Dead Bridegroom Returns for His Bride): 約束を破って再婚しようとする花嫁を、死んだはずの婚約者が花嫁衣裳のまま連れ去る物語。
関連要素 (ATU 769 - The Dead Member of the Family Comes to Visit): 亡くなった家族や恋人が現れるモチーフ。
『獅子オズリック』同様、十字軍遠征を背景とする史劇。挿絵は塗り絵アプリ Sexy Color から。このバラッドに基づくバレエ Alonzo and Imogene が作曲され、上演されたというが、動画は見つからない。
勇敢なる戦士と煌輝らしき乙女と
話交わすは芝生に座り
見つめあったは優しい歓びと
騎士は號けて勇者アロンゾと
乙女はイモジン麗しき
A warrior so bold and a virgin so bright
Conversed, as they sat on the green;
They gazed on each other with tender delight:
Alonzo the Brave was the name of the knight,
The maid’s was the Fair Imogene.
「はあ、しかし」若者ぼやくに 「遠い国へと
戦いに明日は行かねばならぬのか
留守を悲しむそなたの涙も、そのうち止まると
ほかの男が言い寄ってきて、そなたはもっと
金持ちな求婚者の手を取ってしまうのか」
— “And, oh!” said the youth, “since to-morrow I go
To fight in a far distant land,
Your tears for my absence soon leaving to flow,
Some other will court you, and you will bestow
On a wealthier suitor your hand.”
「えぇ、まさか！愛を、私をお疑いなのかしら！
止めてよ、そんな詮索」 と麗しのイモジン、
生きていようと死んでいようと知らないから、
マリア様に誓って、あんたの代わりとかから
イモジンの夫が出るとか御免」
—“Oh! hush these suspicions,” Fair Imogene said,
“Offensive to love and to me!
For, if you be living, or if you be dead,
I swear by the Virgin, that none in your stead
Shall husband of Imogene be.
「まさか本当に他の男に心変わりしちゃって、
勇者アロンゾを忘れてしまうようなら
神様もお許しでしょう、私の嘘つき傲りを罰して
婚礼の席にあなたの亡霊、私の隣に座って
裏切りを咎め 、私をあなたの花嫁に求めて
お墓へ連れ去っても構わないから！」
“And if e’er for another my heart should decide,
Forgetting Alonzo the Brave,
God grant, that, to punish my falsehood and pride,
Your ghost at the marriage may sit by my side,
May tax me with perjury, claim me as bride,
And bear me away to the grave!”—
パレスチナヘと勇敢な兵士は急かされた、
その恋人のひりひりと嘆き悲しめること
しかし、それから1年も経たないうちには
金銀宝石をちりばめたとある男爵が
やってきたは麗しのイモジンの処
To Palestine hasten'd the hero so bold;
His love she lamented him sore:
But scarce had a twelvemonth elapsed, when behold,
A Baron all cover'd with jewels and gold
Arrived at Fair Imogine's door.
男の宝物、贈り物、広大なその領地、
程なく女は、誓いを破る。
男は女の目を眩ませ、頭の中を掻き乱し。
軽く虚しく愛をものにし、
妻に娶るべく連れ帰る。
His treasure, his presents, his spacious domain,
Soon made her untrue to her vows:
He dazzled her eyes; he bewilder'd her brain;
He caught her affections so light and so vain,
And carried her home as his spouse.
そして今、結婚が司祭の祝福にあずかり、
そして今始まった、お祭り騒ぎは。
食卓もきしむ重量級のご馳走に
笑いとさんざめき止むこと知らぬ程に、
お城の鐘が1時を打つその時までは。
And now had the marriage been bless'd by the priest ;
The revelry now was begun :
The tables they groan'd with the weight of the feast ;
Nor yet had the laughter and merriment ceased ,
When the bell of the castle toll 'd— "one ! "
その時までイモジン何故か気がつかず
見知らぬ男が傍らに、いつの間にやら。
その雰囲気凄まじく、物音立てず、
話さず、動かず、周りを見ず。
ただひたすら花嫁を見据えていたとやら。
Then first with amazement Fair Imogine found
That a stranger was placed by her side:
His air was terrific; he utter'd no sound;
He spoke not, he moved not, he look'd not around,
But earnestly gazed on the bride.
目庇は閉じ、身の丈巨大
見るからに鎧どす黒く
その気色ことごと潰す喜び笑い
犬ども見るや、尻尾を巻いて後じさり
部屋の灯りが燃えるは青く！
His vizor was closed, and gigantic his height;
His armour was sable to view:
All pleasure and laughter were hush'd at his sight;
The dogs, as they eyed him, drew back in affright;
The lights in the chamber burnt blue*1!
出てきた男の有様に驚く皆が胸抑え
客人たちの座すは沈黙と恐怖のうちに
遂に花嫁は震えつつ申す外なく「騎士殿へ
「お願いです、どうぞ兜は横に置かせられ
私共の祝宴にお入りください」
His presence all bosoms appeared to dismay;
The guests sat in silence and fear:
At length spoke the bride, while she trembled — “I pray,
Sir Knight, that your helmet aside you would lay,
And deign to partake of our cheer.” —
言い終えると、見知らぬ男は頷くや
ゆっくりと目庇を持ち上げ…
おお！その時、イモジンの目に飛び込んできたのは！
周章狼狽、洒落にならないそのものは
露わとなった髑髏！
The lady is silent : the stranger complies ,
His vizor he slowly unclosed :
Oh ! then what a sight met Fair Imogine's eyes !
What words can express her dismay and surprise ,
When a skeleton's head was exposed !
その時、居合わせた全員恐怖に叫ぶ、
吐き気を催す場面から顔背けて。
ウジ虫這い込み、ウジ虫這い出る、
眼窩やこめかみの辺りに戯れる、
幽霊、イモジンあげつらって。
All present then utter'd a terrified shout;
All turn’d with disgust from the scene.
The worms they crept in, and the worms they crept out,
And sported his eyes and his temples about,
While the spectre address’d Imogine:
「見よ、浮気者めが。とくと見よ！」叫ぶ骸骨
「勇者アロンゾのこと、思い出せ！
そなたの嘘つき傲りを罰する
この亡霊が、婚礼の席で隣に座る
裏切りを咎め、わが花嫁求む
墓へ連れ去ろうと、神よ許し給え！」
“ Behold me, thou false one! behold me! ” he cried;
“Remember Alonzo the Brave!*2
“ God grants, that, to punish thy falsehood and pride,
“ My ghost at thy marriage should sit by thy side,
“ Should tax thee with perjury, claim thee as bride,
“ And bear thee away to the grave!"
かく語るや、腕に花嫁掻き抱き、
取り乱し、甲高くも叫び出す奴を
即ち、獲物もろとも沈んだは、広々と口を開けた地面の底に。
以来二度と、麗しきイモジン見かける者なし、
連れ去りし亡霊共々。
Thus saying, his arms round the lady he wound,
While loudly she shriek'd in dismay;
Then sank with his prey through the wide - yawning ground:
Nor ever again was Fair Imogine found,
Or the spectre who bore her away.
男爵は長らえず、誰もそれ以来は
城を引き継ぐ者もなく
至上の命令により、と年代記の伝えるところでは、
そこにイモジンは、犯した罪の罰を受けては、
嘆かわしい運命を嘆く。
Not long lived the Baron: and none since that time
To inhabit the castle presume;
For chronicles tell, that, by order sublime,
There Imogine suffers the pain of her crime,
And mourps her deplorable doom.
年に4回、真夜中、霊となって、
人が眠りについている頃に
白い花嫁衣裳を身にまとって
骸骨の騎士と広間に現れて、
悲鳴、男が女を転がす度に
At midnight four times in each year does her sprite,
When mortals in slumber are bound,
Array'd in her bridal apparel of white,
Appear in the hall with the skeleton-knight,
And shriek as he whirls her around.
墓場から採りたての髑髏を盃に呷って、
その間も青白い妖怪が二人の周りを踊り。
血を酒のように呑み、この恐ろしい楽譜でもって
皆咆哮「勇者アロンゾの健康を祝して
そして彼の妃、不実なイモジンに！」
While they drink out of skulls newly torn from the grave,
Dancing round them pale spectres are seen:
Their liquor is blood, and this horrible stave
They howl:―"To the health of Alonzo the Brave,
"And his consort, the False Imogine!"
訳注
十字軍にまつわるこのような浮気（？）は、実際のところ少なくなかったようである。まあ、当然か。
結末が吸血鬼なのは、出版時期(1801)を考えると、ポリドリ博士『吸血鬼』(The Vampyre, 1819)よりずっと早い。しかしアルノルト・パウル事件(1732)からは、かなり遅い。
ビュルガー『レノーレ』(1774)、ゲーテ『コリントの花嫁』(1797)の影響も考えるべきだろう。
